Rapid Review: Big Little Lies

Rapid Reviews were initially only going to consist of book reviews, but I’m going to throw in some book-to-movie-slash-TV-series adaptations because I think they still count.

Watching Big Little Lies was pretty much the same experience I had while reading it. (You can read my review of the book, here)

I’m going to be 100% honest and tell you that when I first began reading Big Little Lies, I wasn’t into it. I put it down pretty quickly and it was months before I gave it a second try. I know what turned me off, but I also know that it just wasn’t the right time for me to read that book. However, I gave it a second try a few months later and was able to finish the book

Then the HBO mini series came out, and I tried to watch than and the SAME THING happened. It was so much like the book, and since I was trying to watch it almost immediately after having read the book, it was like a Big Little Lies overload and I just couldn’t do it. I know some people would be over the moon to immerse themselves in the book-world and then to see it on their TV screens soon after, but that wasn’t the case for me. It took me two tries to get into the show, but once I did, I loved it.

So that’s my slow love story with this series. It was not love at first sight, but I see the wonderfulness in it now which is why I wanted to write a quick review of the series.

What I liked most about the show is that it doesn’t follow the book as closely as I thought it would. There are a lot of scenes and storylines that didn’t occur in the book. This makes it easier to separate the two. I think that’s the key with these book adaptations, whether they are adapted into TV shows or movies. You really have to take it with a grain of salt, and ultimately understand that it’s a separate entity from the book.

Also curious, but did anyone else initially think Reese Witherspoon would be playing Celeste and Nicole Kidman would be playing Madeline? I don’t know why but my first thoughts were that they were playing the wrong characters. Of course, after the first episode you can really see why Nicole Kidman is right for Celeste because she has that haunted thing about her, but at first I didn’t see it. One other thing I especially love is the intro montage and the soundtrack (which is on Spotify).

Now I’m looking forward to season two 🙂
