Does Grounding Meditation Really Work?

Last month, I talked about using the Headspace app to practice guided meditation. This month I wanted to talk about the grounding technique which you can use during your meditation. Let’s get started!

What is Grounding?

Sometimes when we feel anxious our thoughts can quickly get carried away. You might even start to literally feel carried away by a swirl of negative thoughts or emotions in your head and lose yourself in the moment.

In short, grounding (sometimes referred to as mindful minutes) literally means grounding yourself into the present. The way you do this is by focusing your attention on your five senses.

Here’s what you can do to bring yourself back to the present:

  • Sight: What can you see around you? Take in the details of the room or setting and really try to notice the details: Any furniture? Special colors? People? Animals?
  • Taste: What can you taste? It might be your toothpaste from this morning, the lip balm you used a little while ago, the last thing you ate, etc.
  • Sound: What little sounds can you hear right now? People talking in the distance, the gentle whirl of an air conditioner or fan? Maybe cars driving by outside, or the hum of the dishwasher in the kitchen.
  • Smell: What are the different smells around you? The familiar scent of your office, perhaps, grass or flowers if you are sitting outside, or even the laundry detergent from your clothes.
  • Touch: What can you feel? Think about where you are sitting: is it a chair covered in fabric, or a cool metal? Maybe you are standing with your feet planted firmly on the ground. What about your clothes, and how the fabric feels against your skin?

Paying attention to your senses is a really effective way of bringing yourself back to the moment. From personal experience I can say that this technique really does wonders for helping to alleviate anxious thoughts and feelings.

What About You?

What mindfulness techniques do you use when you can feel yourself starting to get carried away? Tell me in the comments! 🙂
