How To Practice Self-Care During the Holidays

Based on how quickly November disappeared before our eyes, the holiday season is sure to come and go in the blink of an eye. While we busy ourselves with finishing work before the end of the year, buying presents and attend various holiday functions, it’s so important not to lose track of yourself in all the mess. Don’t forget to practice self-care every day, especially during this time of year, to prevent burnout. Here are some tips for self-care that seem simple but have huge benefits:

Tips for Self-Care

  1. Watch your favorite movies.
    If you’re anything like me, the thought of actually sitting down and watching an entire move seems impossible. But now that it’s getting darker earlier, the evenings are stretching on longer than ever. There are a few holiday movies I always watch this time of year, but the trick is not to watch in the living room with your entire family in the background. Self-care is about doing things for you, so make it personal: Watch on your laptop when you have a few hours alone, or with headphones on. Watch something you love and let it take you away for a couple of hours.
  2. Go to the gym.
    Holidays and food just go together – which is one of the reasons why I love them. But sometimes eating more food and desserts can make you feel not great about yourself. Don’t wallow in – go exercise! If the weather is decent, take a brisk walk around the block. If it’s too cold and dreary, hit the gym for an hour and go at your own pace. I personally like to download shows on Netflix onto my phone and watch while I’m at the gym; they take my mind off the exercise and help me stay at the gym longer. As an added benefit, that post-workout glow-slash-confidence boost will make you feel ten times better.
  3. Meditate before bed.
     If you are anything like me, you fall asleep making lists in your head and thinking of all of the things you still have to do. Put those thoughts on hold for just five minutes and breathe. As soon as you get in bed at night, breathe deeply (you can check back on my meditation posts for tips on how to start meditating) and focus on centering yourself and your mind before you fall asleep. Remind yourself that you have an entire day tomorrow to take care of things, but that for the next 8 hours (or however long you sleep) you are resting your body and mind and it’s okay to do that.
  4. Pamper yourself.
    There are many ways to pamper yourself. Taking a hot bath or a steamy shower is one way to do it. Privacy, even just for twenty minutes, will give you time to collect yourself and re-balance. Treat yourself to a few new bath products like some fun soap, new shampoo you have been wanting to try, or exfoliating cloths. Use soothing hand cream (or foot cream), lip balm, and face cream. Winter is a notoriously bad time for skin and hair, so taking a few extra minutes to make sure you have the right tools and products can have lasting benefits.
  5. Make a gratitude list.
    On a sheet of paper, write down five things you are grateful for. Then write five more. It can be something as simple as the coffee or tea you had this morning, the favorite sweater you love to wear this time of year, even the bomb sandwich you had for lunch! The point of this activity is not only to center yourself but to remind you that there are nice things in your life, and that things will be okay even if the holidays don’t turn out picture-perfect.
