After having just deleted the most-used slash most-loathed app on my phone, I’m starting this post on the evening of Tuesday, March 28 and the need to record the exact date will be explained below.
A little background to start: I can, at times, be borderline obsessive when it comes to checking my phone. I like to know when things are happening are in the world and certain apps feature local, national and worldwide news up to the minute. It’s extremely distracting to feel like you have to check your phone multiple times an hour every single day so you can stay up with things. The app I have most issues with is Facebook. Not only am I sick of it, but it takes up a large amount of space on my phone. So really it is quite practical to just delete it, right? That’s exactly what I did this morning. I had no intention of doing this, no prior planning at all. I just did it, and it was gone.
I was inspired by this episode of Gretchen Rubin’s Happier podcast titled “Delete a Soul-Sucking App and a Deep Dive into Happier 911 Songs” which is pretty self-explanatory. Her sister Elizabeth shares that her soul-sucking app is Candy Crush (been there!) but after this podcast they found that the majority of listeners wrote in and said theirs was Facebook. Huh.
My desire to delete it may also have had something to do with the post I had written early yesterday regarding meditation and zen, now that I think about it.
At any rate, since I don’t want to be tempted to download the app again I’m challenging myself to go a full week without it. I’ll follow up next week when the week is up. I can’t lie, my first instinct is to feel like this:
But really, as soon as the app was gone I felt just a little bit lighter. I would say it’s all in my head, but isn’t everything when you think about it?
